Usability testing

There are several methodologies for performing empirical usability tests, mainly experimentation, thinking aloud, observation, questionnaires, interviews and focus groups. We use the ISO-9241 standard, which is the accepted standard for planning such tests, together with software tools and methodologies which have been developed in-house, based on our cumulative experience. Our goal is to test and evaluate the interface on real target users and includes the following stages.

Testing Design

In this part of the process, the testing design will be developed according to the ISO-9241 standard and will include the following modules:

  • Defining usability goals - we’ll work with your company to define the usability goals that will be measured in the testing phase.
  • Defining test goals - we’ll work with your company to elaborate the test goals defined above.
  • Identifying performance criteria for the usability testing – the testing will include criteria for effectiveness, efficiency, and satisfaction that will be derived from the usability goals.
  • Detailed test design – designing test scripts based on the expected workflows of target users.
  • Questionnaire – users will be asked to fill in questionnaires before and/or during and/or after the test. They will also be interviewed after participating in the test. Areas of questioning will include human factors oriented questions, marketing topics and content related questions. These may include: experience using the system, expectations from the system, ideas for new features, expected usage of the system, understanding of the concept, and profiling questions.

Pilot testing in Israel

In this part of the process, a preliminary test will be conducted in Israel. In this phase, 3 users will be tested. As this stage's goal is to inspect the usability test design, these users do not necessarily have to be typical users of the system.

Testing in Europe

In this part of the process, UI will organize Usability Testing in one European country. The testing will be conducted by a UI staff member or close associate. Users meeting the pre-defined profile will be recruited by an approved research company in Europe.

Videotaping and think-aloud analysis

In this part, users will be videotaped while performing the test and asked to “think-aloud” during the taping process. UI will provide your company with a reduced version of its unique usability tool, enabling to view the user and the program screen simultaneously.

Analyzing the UT results

In this final part of the process, results of the usability test will be analyzed and documented, including actionable implications.
